Prohibition in Northern Canada

Prohibition in Northern Canada

Patrick mcguire is the DIRECTOR/producer of PROHIBITION IN NORTHERN CANADA (2014)

Nunavut is Canada's youngest territory, home to a vast majority of its Inuit population. Founded in 1999, it's also where alcohol prohibition is still in effect.

The communities of Nunavut wrestle with tragedy, brought on by the post-generational trauma of the violent actions of Canada's government through residential schools and forced relocation.

Today, it is a civilization in its infancy, as it's only been about two generations since the traditionally nomadic way of the Inuit people has been aggressively forced into a sedentary one.

This beautiful arctic territory suffers much higher crime rates than the national average, and it's estimated 95% of the police calls are alcohol related.

Patrick McGuire directed and produced this documentary alongside host and co-producer Raf Katigbak, looking at the impact prohibition has had on the territory.

The documentary has been viewed over 1 million times on YouTube.
